Tuur Roels

I developed a passion for photography at the tender age of 11.  But  I decided to play it safe and study Business Engineering at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), where I worked after my studies as a research assistant. I then developed a fifteen-year career as management, sales and marketing professional in tech startups. In 2004 I returned to university to teach growth-oriented entrepreneurship and innovation to a wide range of students.

A benign midlife crisis in 1996 made me reassess my priorities, and I became a part-time professional photographer / journalist for major Belgian magazines and newspapers: Weekend Knack, De Morgen, Humo, De Standaard, P-Magazine... I have had close to 100 publications over a ten-year period.

My first speciality is festivals and events.  I covered extensively the Belgian festival and events scene. Travels are my other passion. I visited a/o India, Vietnam, Ukraine, Costa Rica, China, San Francisco, Cornwall, and others.

I like to combine both passions: I was the first to publish in Belgium about the extraordinary Burning Man festival held in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada, USA. I also covered the carnival of Salvador Do Bahia, Brazil, the Full Moon Party in Thailand. Often.  I also wrote the articles.

My photographs have been recognized for their artistic value. I held a number of exhibitions; I exhibited my Burning Man series, printed on large canvasses.

Major health issues stopped my photography career around 2010. Currently, having reached my retirement age at university I restart my professional activity as photographer.
